2009 Acura RL
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What kind of key does the 2009 Acura RL actually use?

This specific year is a mechanical key. That means a metal key cut to your vehicle. No remote, no fob battery, no buttons. It goes into the ignition cylinder and the door locks the same way a key has always worked. A replacement is a matter of cutting the blade correctly to match your vehicle. If someone quotes you fob programming or chip enrollment for this job, that is not what this car needs.

Q: What should I have ready when you arrive for the key service?

Photo ID and proof of ownership. I verify the VIN directly off the vehicle before I cut anything. If you have a working key with you, even a worn one, hand it over because it gives me a reference for the cut. If you have nothing at all, no key and no access to the car, just let me know when you call so I can come prepared to decode the lock from scratch rather than copy an existing key.

Q: My 2009 RL key is worn down and sometimes does not turn cleanly. Can I get a new one cut before it fails completely?

Yes, and that is actually the right call. A worn key that still works is the easiest reference I have. I can decode the cut from the worn key or from the lock itself, cut a fresh replacement to the correct depth specifications, and you walk away with a key that turns the way it should. Waiting until the key stops working entirely means a harder job and sometimes a longer one.

Q: I bought a key blank online for my 2009 RL. Can you just cut it?

Depends on the blank. If the keyway profile on what you bought matches the 2009 RL, yes. If it is the wrong blank, cutting it will not produce a working key regardless of how accurate the depths are. Bring it when you call and I will tell you right away whether it is usable.

2009 Acura RL Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Thille/Montalvo, I got a call from a guy who had snapped his only key off in the door lock. Not the ignition, the door. The bow of the key was in his hand and the blade was stuck inside the cylinder.

He had already tried a magnet, tried a thin piece of metal, and then called me. By the time I pulled up he was standing outside his RL in the afternoon heat looking at his front door like it had personally wronged him.

I extracted the broken blade without damaging the cylinder, which matters because that lock cylinder is what I read to cut the new key if there is no other reference. Decoded the cut right there on site, cut a replacement key blade to match, and had him opening every door and starting the car before I packed up.

He mentioned he had called the dealer first. They told him to tow it in and come back the next day. I was done in his driveway in under an hour. That is the difference between a mobile locksmith and a service department queue.

Acura RL Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I have to tow my 2009 Acura RL to the dealer for a replacement key?▼

No. If your RL is sitting in Thille/Montalvo or anywhere nearby in Ventura, I come to the vehicle. This is a mechanical key job, which means I can cut a replacement on site. No tow required. If you have a working key I can use it as a reference. If you have nothing at all, I decode the lock or pull the key code from the VIN and cut from that.
