In Downtown Ventura I got a call for a 2012 Acura RL where the key technically worked, but the car kept acting like it belonged to someone else.
Every unlock was pulling up the wrong seat position and mirror angle. The MID kept flashing the wrong Driver ID. The owner flipped the remote over and pointed at the big "1" on the back label like the car was ignoring it on purpose.
Acura's Smart Entry system ties each remote to a driver memory profile. When that link slips, everything still functions, just for the wrong person. There's a quick relink: ignition to LOCK, press UNLOCK on the correct remote, then ignition to ON and check the MID. We ran through it on the spot, and the Driver ID finally matched the remote label. Seat slid back to his setting. Mirrors adjusted. He just stood there watching the seat move like the car was waking up.
He only had one working insert key, so I cut him a spare on a 35111-SJA-305 blank with the Philips ID46 (PCF7936) transponder chip and registered it to the immobilizer. Now he's not one lost key away from a tow.
The moment that stuck was when I popped the ignition knob cover and showed him the hidden mechanical cylinder underneath. He had no idea it was there. Once he saw that there's still a physical keyhole under all the smart tech, the whole car felt less like a black box to him.
