In Ventura, out at Lake Casitas Recreation Area, a 2001 RL got dropped in my lap mid-mess.
The owner had one worn key that still turned the cylinders and a fresh-cut copy that opened the door but would not crank the starter. Green key icon blinked steady like a metronome. Turns out the last guy who tried to program it lost connection halfway through and just left it there.

Then we did it the right way. The red learning key was still sealed in the glove box. I used it to enter registration mode, rewrote the key data clean, and registered a fresh master transponder along with the original worn key.
When it finally cranked, he didn't say much. Just a slow nod and a long look at the lake like the whole day had restarted too.
The dealer path for this would have been a tow, proof of ownership at the counter, and a wait that can stretch into days. This one got handled on site for a fraction of that route.
