On the RL, that message means the vehicle isn’t detecting the remote inside the cabin with ignition in ACC (I) or ON (II). First verify the correct CR2025 and solid battery contact tension. If that checks out, I scan the Keyless Access system and review antenna data. The system uses a Smart control unit (38320-SJA-A03) and multiple LF antennas, including console (38388-SJA-003) and bumper (38389-SJA-003). One code I see is B1660 for a front interior LF antenna circuit open.

In Downtown Ventura, I got a call for a 2009 Acura RL where the key fob was literally coming apart.

The case had split at the seam and the rubber button pad was starting to walk out. He could still use it, but every lock press felt like a gamble because the remote would flex in his hand.

I popped the remote open on the hood so he could see what I was seeing. The board was intact, contacts clean, and it had the common E058 marking found on many RL fobs (FCC ID ACJ8D8E24A04, 314 MHz). No water damage, no corrosion. This was a housing failure, not a programming issue.

On this RL, the fob is either 72147-SJA-A01 (Memory 1) or 72147-SJA-A11 (Memory 2). Inside is the insert blade 35111-SJA-305 with an ID46 (PCF7936) transponder for immobilizer authorization.

I transferred his original electronics into a new shell, reseated the board and insert blade, installed a fresh CR2025, and tested everything: lock, unlock, trunk, panic, and a push-button start check.

Same working remote, just solid plastic again. Dealer route would’ve meant ordering a full assembly and waiting. I handled it on site in Downtown Ventura and saved him a chunk of change.
