She called at 8:45pm from the community college lot in Goleta. Her 2004 GMC Yukon wouldn't start after her night class. She'd turned the car off two hours earlier and now the push-to-start button did nothing. No lights on the dash, no crank, no response. She was alone in a dark parking lot and campus security was about to close.

I got to the college lot and connected my ACDP to pull the body control module data. It told me the existing fob had dropped out of the car's key memory entirely after a low-voltage event. The car's battery was weak and the BCM had lost the key pairing during a voltage dip. I charged the battery enough to stabilize the system, then reprogrammed her fob through OBD. Her remote, FCC ID LHJ011, was a 3-button smart key. Once the BCM relearned it, the car started immediately.
She drove home that night. Total was 105. The dealer would have been 221 the next day plus a tow. The problem wasn't the fob at all. It was a weak battery that caused the BCM to forget the key. That kind of diagnosis is why I carry multiple tools. The first assumption isn't always the right one.
