A college student was back home in Ventura for break, staying in one of those apartment complexes up in the Hillsides with tight visitor parking. She called me about her 2016 GMC Yukon, but the situation was already a step past a normal replacement job.
A locksmith had gotten to it before me. Tried to program a new fob, failed, pocketed money for the attempt, and left. Her car now refused to start with any key at all. She was upfront about being nervous when she called. Said she did not know if the car was fixable or if she had somehow ended up with a bigger problem.
I pulled up to her parking spot and connected to the OBD port before I said much. Touch unlock on both front doors, the lock button on the handle, all six buttons on the fob, push-button start. Everything came back normal.
She stared at the confirmation screen for a second and said she half expected it to fail again. Understandable, given how her day had gone. The dealer had quoted her a number that assumed a full module replacement was in her future. It was not. The module was fine. It just needed the mess cleaned up and the job done correctly the first time.
