2001 GMC Yukon
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long will a replacement key last on a 2001 Yukon?

A well-cut key on a healthy cylinder should last years without any issue. The weak point on a truck this age is usually the ignition cylinder itself, not the new key. If the cylinder is already worn, a fresh key helps but won't fix internal tumbler wear. Worth knowing before you duplicate a worn key -- copying a worn key just passes the problem forward.

Q: What if the new key stops working after a few weeks?

Call me. Every key I make is covered. If it stops turning or gets sticky, I come back and sort it out. On a 2001 Yukon specifically, a key that worked fine and then gets hard to turn is almost always a cylinder issue, not the key. The lock tumblers on these trucks wear over time, and a correctly cut key can actually expose that wear by fitting tighter than the rounded-down original did.

Q: My 2001 Yukon turns over but then dies after a few seconds. Is that a key problem?

On a lot of vehicles that symptom points to the immobilizer or a chip issue, but I am going to stay out of that territory for this truck and just say: bring the key question to me and I will cut you a correct replacement. If the start-then-stall issue continues after that, that is a separate diagnosis that lives in the engine management or fuel system side of things, not in the key itself. A locksmith makes the key.

Q: I lost both keys to my 2001 Yukon. Can you still make one without the original?

Yes, and this is one of the more common calls I get on trucks this age. With no original key, I decode the lock directly -- usually the door lock or the ignition -- read the cut depths from the cylinder, and cut a new key to match. No original required, no towing to a dealer, no waiting on a key code lookup that may or may not come back clean on a 20-plus-year-old vehicle.

2001 GMC Yukon Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

She called around 8:45 on a Tuesday night from the community college lot off Storke Road in Goleta, near the Isla Vista edge of campus. Her 2001 GMC Yukon wouldn't start after her night class. She'd locked it two hours earlier without any trouble, came back, and got nothing. No crank, no response, just a dark cab.

Campus security was wrapping up for the night. A tow would have dropped the truck somewhere until morning, which didn't help her get home.

I pulled up and the issue was mechanical, not electronic. The key was turning but not catching cleanly. The ignition cylinder had enough wear that the key wasn't rotating the tumblers all the way through. A second spare she found in her bag, cut years ago and worn down at the tip, confirmed it: that key was the problem, not the truck.

I decoded the lock on site, cut a fresh replacement key to the correct profile right there in the lot, and she started the Yukon on the first try. No tow, no waiting until the dealer opened in the morning, no mystery diagnosis.

She just needed the right key, cut correctly, made on the spot. That is the whole job sometimes, and there is nothing wrong with that.

GMC Yukon Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on a 2001 GMC Yukon?▼

For a 2001 Yukon, the key is purely mechanical -- a metal blade cut to fit your ignition and door locks. There is no fob, no electronics, nothing to program. OEM versus aftermarket is mostly a question of key blank quality and how well the blade is cut. I use quality blanks that are spec'd to the correct keyway for this generation of Yukon and cut them on calibrated equipment.
