Both exist, and honestly the aftermarket parts for this generation of GM truck are mature enough that quality options are easy to find. The 2006 Yukon fob is a well-documented piece of hardware. The factory FCC ID on the fob is widely referenced, the dealer part numbers are known, and there are aftermarket versions that meet the same electrical spec.

What matters more than who stamped the logo on the shell is whether the part is confirmed compatible and whether the programming is done correctly. A fob that doesn't match the right spec won't pair, and a fob that gets paired sloppily will drop out or behave intermittently. We verify compatibility before we touch the programmer. How long will the replacement key last?

A properly programmed key on a 2006 Yukon should last years without issue. The electronics in these fobs are simple and proven. The transponder inside the key has no moving parts and doesn't wear out from normal use.

The physical side is a different story. The key blade takes the most abuse. On a truck this age, the blade and the fob shell are usually what give out first, not the electronics. If the shell cracks or the buttons get soft and unresponsive but the key still starts the truck, we can often move the internals into a new shell. That avoids a full reprogramming job. Come in with whatever's left of the old key and we'll tell you what makes sense.

On this generation of GM truck, a known post-programming issue is a security warning appearing on the dash cluster indicating a problem with the theft deterrent system. When that happens, the truck may crank but not start, or it may start once and not again. Nine times out of ten that's a relearn that didn't fully complete, or the transponder antenna ring around the ignition cylinder is weak and intermittently dropping the signal. It's not usually the key itself.

I have a working key but I want a spare. Can I add a second fob myself without going to the dealer?

Yes, and this is one of the reasons I like working on this generation of GM truck. The 2006 Yukon supports an onboard programming sequence for adding a remote fob as long as you already have access to the vehicle. The process involves the door locks and a timed sequence, and it's documented well enough that owners on GM forums have done it themselves with a blank fob they bought online.

The catch: the sequence has a tight timing window and it's easy to miss a step and have to start over. Also, the ignition transponder side of a new key still requires a programmer if you want the spare to actually start the truck, not just lock and unlock the doors. Remote function and ignition authorization are two separate things on this platform. If you just want a backup fob for locking the doors, the DIY path is real. My fob still starts the truck but the remote buttons stopped working. What's going on?

Start with the CR2032. Seriously, do this first. On these fobs, a battery that's dropped enough voltage will kill the remote signal while the transponder keeps working fine, because the transponder is energized by the ignition antenna and doesn't draw from the battery the same way the radio transmitter does. So you end up with a key that starts the truck and does nothing else.

If a fresh CR2032 doesn't bring the buttons back, the next thing to check is whether the fob got reprogrammed out of the system somehow. It happens occasionally after a battery disconnect or certain shop procedures. That's a quick fix with the right tools. If the fob body is cracked or the button contacts inside are corroded, the shell can be replaced without touching the programming at all.
