2009 GMC Yukon
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Can you wipe lost or stolen keys from my Yukon so they can't be used to start it?

Yes. The standard GM key programming procedure on this generation wipes all previously registered transponder keys and starts the learned-key list fresh. Only the keys physically present and programmed during the session will start the truck after that. Old keys, lost keys, stolen keys, all of them get erased. If your keys were stolen rather than just misplaced, this matters a lot.

Q: Does my 2009 Yukon have a hidden emergency blade in the fob?

No. The 2009 Yukon with a transponder key uses a single metal key that goes directly into the ignition cylinder and the door lock. There is no fob, no remote, and no hidden blade to pull out of anything. The key itself is both the mechanical and electronic component in one. If you lose it, you need a replacement key cut to your vehicle and programmed to the immobilizer. That's the whole job.

Q: My 2009 Yukon cranks fine but shuts off after one or two seconds. Could this be a key problem?

That's one of the most common ways a transponder issue shows up on these trucks. The engine cranks, fires briefly, then the fuel system cuts out and it dies. Owners often go straight to fuel pump because the behavior feels mechanical. But on a 2009 Yukon, if the security system doesn't get a clean read from the transponder in the key, it kills fuel delivery as a theft deterrent.

Q: Can I program a second transponder key myself at home so I have a spare?

On the 2009 Yukon, there is an onboard relearn procedure that can work if you already have at least one working programmed key. It involves a timed sequence using the ignition and the existing key. Some owners on GM truck forums have done it successfully with a pre-cut spare bought ahead of time.

2009 GMC Yukon Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A college student staying at an apartment near Isla Vista called me on a Saturday morning. She was home from school, had her 2009 Yukon in visitor parking, and was dealing with a situation that wasn't her fault at all.

Another locksmith had already been out. He tried to program a replacement transponder key, failed mid-sequence, left fault codes scattered through the body control module, and then charged her for the attempt and drove away. After that, the Yukon wouldn't accept any key. Not the original, not the new one he'd cut. Nothing.

She found me online, read through the reviews, and called. She was upfront about being burned once already and not wanting it to happen again. Fair.

I plugged into the OBD port and saw the problem immediately. The previous guy had used a programming method that didn't match this vehicle's setup, bailed out partway through, and left the module in a state where it was rejecting everything. There were fault codes stacked from the incomplete session.

I cleared the codes, confirmed the module had settled back to a stable state, and then ran a proper key learning sequence from scratch. Walked her through what I was seeing on the screen as I went so she wasn't just standing there wondering. When the key registered clean, I showed her the confirmation. Then she tried it herself. Started right up.

She mentioned the dealer had quoted her to fix what the other locksmith broke. I didn't charge extra for the cleanup. That's not a bonus service, it's just how the job is supposed to go.

GMC Yukon Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to handle all-keys-lost on my 2009 Yukon?▼

Call a mobile locksmith who knows GM's key learning process, not the dealer. All-keys-lost on a 2009 Yukon means no working key exists to use as a seed for adding a new one, so the job requires diagnostic equipment and the right software to reset and re-register from scratch. Dealers handle it, but you're looking at significant wait time, a likely tow if the truck won't move, and dealer-rate labor on top of parts.
