2023 GMC Yukon
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Is a mobile locksmith actually cheaper than going to the GMC dealer for a key replacement?

On a 2023 Yukon, yes, by a meaningful amount. Dealers bill the fob and programming as separate line items, and the programming charge alone on a newer GM vehicle can be substantial before you even count the part. I use the same professional-grade diagnostic equipment and OEM-spec fobs without the service department overhead, which is where most of that gap comes from. And the mobile part matters too.

Q: Does your price include cutting and programming, or are those separate?

One price, everything included. The fob itself, programming it to your Yukon through the OBD port, the emergency key blade cut to your vehicle, and a full function test before I leave. No separate line for programming labor, no shop fee, no trip charge billed on top. Dealers routinely separate these, so make sure you are comparing the full dealer total, not just the part price, when you are thinking through the difference.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2023 Yukon. Can I program it myself or do I need a locksmith?

You need professional equipment. The 2023 Yukon does not have a DIY onboard relearn for the remote fob. There is no button sequence, no ignition-cycle trick. Programming goes through the OBD port with a diagnostic tool that can communicate with the vehicle security system. If you already have the fob, I can still come out and handle just the programming. Buying the blank yourself sometimes saves a little, sometimes does not, depending on where you sourced it.

Q: My 2023 Yukon fob has short range all of a sudden. Is it dying?

Usually the CR2450 battery. That is the first thing to check. A weak cell can drop the range significantly before the fob stops working entirely, and it often shows up as inconsistent, working fine from ten feet but not from thirty. Make sure the replacement is actually a CR2450 and not a thinner coin cell that looks similar, because a loose contact will give you the same symptom as a dead battery.

2023 GMC Yukon Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out on the Eastside in Santa Barbara, I got a call from a home health aide whose only Yukon fob had stopped working. She had a carport, a full morning of patient visits lined up, and zero backup key. She had already looked up tow rates before she called me.

I told her to stay put.

When I got there the fob looked fine, no cracked housing, no water damage. But the car wasn't seeing it at all. She mentioned she had swapped the battery herself a few weeks earlier. I popped it open and found a CR2032 sitting in a slot designed for a CR2450. Same diameter, wrong thickness, contacts barely kissing the cell. The fob had been running on a partial connection for weeks and finally gave up that morning.

Fresh CR2450, contacts cleaned, fob snapped shut. The Yukon recognized it on the first press.

She had rearranged two patient visits for a battery swap. Took me about four minutes once I was standing there.

She asked if I could have told her that over the phone. Probably, if she had known which battery was in it. That's the honest answer.

If the battery had been correct and the fob was genuinely dead, I carry blanks for this vehicle and have the equipment to program a replacement on site. That would have been a longer job but still done in her carport before 9am. Either way, no tow.

GMC Yukon Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How much does a 2023 GMC Yukon key replacement cost?▼

Call for the exact number, but I can tell you it is a fraction of what the dealer quotes. GMC dealers typically separate the fob cost, the programming labor, and any diagnostic fees into different line items, and those add up fast on a full-size SUV.
