2002 Acura RSX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How do I spot a scam locksmith before one shows up to my RSX?

The pattern is consistent: a low number quoted over the phone, then a much higher number once you're stuck and they're already there. Some will also quote a "service call" fee separate from the actual work, and add a "programming fee" after the fact that was never mentioned. One thing to watch for with Acura jobs specifically - some operators quote a price for cutting a key but don't disclose upfront that the transponder programming is a separate charge.

Q: Will the replacement key and remote work exactly like the original factory unit?

Yes. When the job is done right, the replacement functions the same as what came with the car. Lock, unlock, trunk release, and the transponder start - all of it. We test every function on site before we leave. One thing RSX owners run into when they buy remotes online: the fob has to match the factory FCC ID for your specific vehicle.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can I program it myself, or do I need someone with equipment?

Depends on your situation. The 2002 RSX does have an onboard remote programming sequence - it runs through the ignition cylinder and door lock, no OBD tool required. But there's a catch: you need a working, already-programmed key present to enter the sequence. If you have one good key and you're just adding the second remote you bought online, the DIY route is a real option and there are owner-documented procedures on forums for this generation.

Q: My RSX starts fine but the remote stopped working. Does the whole key need to be replaced?

Not necessarily. If the car starts, the transponder side of your key is still talking to the immobilizer. The remote portion is a separate circuit in the same fob, and it fails independently. First move is the CR2025. A battery that reads low on a multimeter can still drop out under the load of transmitting a signal, so "not dead" and "good enough" aren't the same thing.

2002 Acura RSX Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A plumbing contractor called me at 6:30 in the morning from a construction supply yard in the Sweetwater area of National City. Crew was already on the clock, job site was waiting, and his RSX wouldn't cooperate.

He had the fob in his hand. Key turned, car cranked, didn't fire. He'd already tried locking and unlocking a few times, tried holding the fob closer to the cylinder. Nothing. He was calm about it on the phone but I could hear the pressure underneath.

I was at the yard in about 25 minutes. The fob was the original factory remote - the three-button unit with the factory FCC ID still printed on the back. I popped it open on the hood right in front of him. The CR2025 inside wasn't dead, it was just low enough to fail under load. The transponder side of the key was still registering, which is why the security light wasn't staying solid, but the remote functions were going flaky and the signal was inconsistent at the cylinder.

Fresh battery, confirmed the remote re-registered correctly, tested door lock, unlock, and trunk release, then had him start the car himself so he could feel it. Total hands-on time was around 20 minutes.

He was headed to his job site before 7:15. Dealer would have meant a tow, a service appointment, and most of the morning gone with a crew sitting idle. He texted later. His guys never knew anything had happened.
