Got a call on a Friday night from a couple over near the Heritage Park area in Old Poway. They had been at an evening event, came out to the parking lot around nine, and the remote on their 2005 RSX had gone completely dark. No response. Doors would not lock from the fob, and they were convinced something deeper was wrong with the car.
The key still turned the ignition, which told me right away the transponder side was fine. The remote was the issue.
I was already in the area and had everything in the van. The correct fob housing, fresh CR2025 cells, and the programming equipment were all in labeled drawers in the back. I did not have to order anything or make a second trip.
Pulled up, confirmed the key blade was turning and the engine was running normally. Replaced the battery, tested range. Still inconsistent. The contacts inside the fob housing had some corrosion on them, the kind that builds up slowly and looks like nothing until it finally kills function entirely. Cleaned the contacts, reseated everything, ran the programming sequence to confirm the remote was fully paired and registered.
Walked around the car, tested every button, confirmed the trunk release, locked and unlocked from distance. Done.
They mentioned the dealer had already quoted them for a full replacement key on a previous visit when the range first started dropping. Would have been a longer wait and a lot more money than a contact cleaning and a CR2025. Sometimes the job is smaller than everyone assumes.
