2009 Audi Q5
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2009 Audi Q5 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was parked near the Cal State San Marcos campus, the CSUSM Area stretch of San Marcos that gets busy around midday with people running errands between classes and appointments. The call came from a woman who'd been trying to sort out a spare key for her 2009 Audi Q5 for about three weeks.

She'd gone to the dealer first. They quoted her the key as one line item, cutting as another, programming labor as a third, and there was something about a handling fee she hadn't seen coming. Then they told her the part would need to be sourced and she'd need to schedule a return visit once it arrived. She did the math, decided she wasn't doing it, and started looking for another option.

When she called me she asked one question: is your price really all-in. I told her one number covers the fob, the cut, and the programming. That's the whole job.

I pulled up to where she was parked, ran my diagnostic tool through the OBD port under the dash, pulled the immobilizer data, got what I needed to register the new key. On a 2009 Q5 the process involves reading the security data from the system and writing the new fob into the key memory. It took about 25 minutes from the time I connected to the time I walked both keys to make sure everything was responding: locks, the emergency blade in the cylinder, the engine starting clean.

She stood off to the side watching. When the second test start fired up without hesitation, she just nodded like she'd been waiting for something to finally go the way it was supposed to.

The dealer comparison didn't even come up again. She already knew the number and what it had taken to get to that point.
