Out near the Lake Poway Area, I got a call from a guy who said his Q5 was showing a key-not-detected warning and the push-to-start was not responding. He had already swapped the battery in the fob, seated it correctly, tested it twice. Still nothing. He figured it was the fob itself and started looking up dealer appointments.
When I got there, I went through the fob first anyway, just to be thorough. Battery was fine, contacts were clean, the blade inside still popped out properly. The fob was not the problem.
The issue was on the vehicle side. The antenna that reads the fob had developed a fault, which is a known weak point on this generation. The car simply was not picking up the signal even when the fob was inches away from the start button. That kind of failure gets misread as a dead key all the time.
We sorted it out on site. I had my programming equipment with me, confirmed the existing key was still enrolled, addressed the antenna side of the diagnosis, and ran through the full button test: lock, unlock, trunk release, and the alarm. Everything came back solid before I closed up the service van.
He had already mentally budgeted for a dealer visit plus a tow since the car would not start. What he actually needed was a proper mobile diagnosis instead of an assumption. That is most of the job right there.
