Most all-keys-lost calls come with a story. Usually it is the same one: bought the car used, meant to get a spare made, life got in the way, and then something physical happened to the one key they had.
A spin instructor at a studio near The Crosby in Rancho Santa Fe called me early on a weekday. Her 2013 Audi Q5 was sitting in the lot and she had two pieces of a key in her hand. The flip shell had cracked at the hinge, and when she tried to fold it the blade snapped. The blade was still stuck in the door lock. She had zero working keys and a class starting in forty minutes.
I got the broken blade out of the lock cylinder with my extraction tools, no damage to the cylinder. Then I looked at what was left. The circuit board inside the cracked shell was intact. The chip was reading fine. That matters because it meant I could work from what she had rather than starting from scratch with a full all-keys-lost reset, which takes longer because of a timed security countdown built into the process.
I rebuilt the fob into a new shell, cut a fresh blade to match her vehicle, and programmed a second key while I was there so she would not be back in this same spot six months from now. Both keys tested on all functions before I left the lot.
She made her class. The dealer was mentioned once, briefly, when she said a friend told her to expect a long wait and a number that made her wince. She did not have either problem.
