When a 1997 Buick Century key is done wrong, it doesn't just "kind of work." It fails. Buick's theft-deterrent system is particular about chip types. On older PK3 models, a wrong transponder triggers a solid security light and the PCM cuts fuel. On newer smart key models, a cheap aftermarket fob might lock and unlock fine but force you to use the backup pocket every time you start.
A set designer at the warehouse district in Ramona had a key made by another locksmith for his Century that stopped working after about five days. It would start cold, but after driving and shutting off, the next start would fail with a security light. I used my IM608 to read the existing key data, confirmed it was the wrong chip variant, and programmed a new key with the correct transponder. His remote, FCC ID ABO0204T, also had a weak CR2032 battery contributing to intermittent remote failures on top of the chip issue.
The replacement has been working for months and cost him $95. The dealer would have charged $200. On Buick, the chip type matters more than most people realize because the BCM is less forgiving of close matches.
