Over in Old Escondido, near the weekend record swap that sets up in the lot off Grand Avenue, a guy flagged me down after I'd already finished another call nearby. He had his 2005 Buick Century, key in hand, fob in the other hand, looking like a man who had spent two weeks getting bad advice.

Lock, unlock, trunk release. All confirmed.

He'd burned two weeks chasing a specialist. The actual job took under an hour in a parking lot. The car didn't know the difference.
