I got a call from a guy in the Westwood part of Rancho Bernardo. His 1998 Buick Century had been sitting in the driveway most of the weekend. The ignition key was turning fine but the remote had completely stopped responding. No lock, no unlock, nothing. He had already swapped the CR2032 twice using batteries from different packs, so he knew that was not it.
When I pulled up, he handed me the fob and I could feel the case had some flex to it, like it had been dropped a few times. Popped it open and the battery contact on the positive side had a slight outward bow. The new battery was making contact, but not firmly. Bent the contact back, seated a fresh CR2032, and it came right back.
Then we ran through the onboard programming sequence to make sure the vehicle recognized it cleanly. On these older GM remotes from this era, there is a cycle you can do right at the car without plugging anything in. It takes about two minutes once you know the steps.
He had been ready to order a whole new fob online and then figure out programming. Did not need any of that.
The dealer comparison came up on its own when he mentioned they had told him to come in and bring the car. He laughed when I told him I was already in his driveway.
