I got a call from a paint shop out in Rancho Santa Fe, over at The Crosby. A CT4 had come in for a respray, and somewhere in the process the key situation fell apart. Another locksmith had already taken a run at programming a replacement fob, hit an immobilizer fault mid-process, and left the car in a state where the push-to-start was completely dead and the module was rejecting everything.
The paint shop was apologetic when they called. That kind of call is always a little awkward because I'm walking into someone else's incomplete work, and the car is already in a fault state before I touch anything.
When I got there, the CT4 was sitting in the back of the shop looking fine on the outside. The problem was invisible. The previous attempt had locked the body control module into a fault state, and it was not going to cooperate with a standard programming sequence until that fault was cleared.
I pulled the module and worked it on my bench tool, reading the memory directly. Cleared the fault condition, rebuilt the key registration table cleanly, and then went back to the standard enrollment sequence. First clean attempt after the reset, the fob registered without complaint.
The paint shop owner watched most of it. He asked good questions and I walked him through what had gone wrong the first time, because that kind of thing can happen to a customer's car again, and now he knows what to look for before handing off to whoever gets called next.
Total time was around 90 minutes. Longer than a clean first-attempt job, but not bad considering the state the car was in when I arrived. He saved a meaningful amount compared to the dealer route, which would have also meant a flatbed and a multi-day wait.
