2000 Cadillac Eldorado
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Is a locksmith cheaper than the Cadillac dealer for a fob replacement?

Generally yes, by a noticeable margin. Cadillac dealers tend to bill fob work as separate line items: the part, the labor, the programming fee, sometimes a diagnostic charge on top. A mobile locksmith rolls all of that into one number, with no shop overhead and no luxury brand markup built into the price. The gap is usually meaningful enough that most people who call a dealer first and then call me comment on the difference.

Q: Does the price include cutting and programming?

Yes. One price, everything included. On the 2000 Eldorado, the fob and the transponder key are separate components, so the job scope depends on which one needs attention. If it's just the remote fob, that's the fob, the battery, programming, and a full button test at range. If it's the ignition key, that's the key blank, cutting to your vehicle, transponder enrollment, and a start test before I leave. If you need both, we handle both on site.

Q: My Eldorado starts fine but the remote won't lock or unlock the doors. What's going on?

On these early-2000s GM systems, the remote receiver module and the ignition transponder system are separate. So a fob that stops responding to lock and unlock commands does not affect starting the car at all, and vice versa. The most common causes on a fob this age are a dead or weak CR2032 battery, corroded battery contacts inside the fob housing, or a damaged transmitter from being dropped or getting wet. Start with the battery.

Q: Can I program a replacement fob for my 2000 Eldorado myself at home?

These late-1990s and early-2000s GM remotes do have an onboard programming sequence that can work if you already have at least one working programmed fob in hand. The sequence involves the ignition and existing fob together. However, if you have no working fob at all, or if the sequence doesn't take, you need a programmer.

2000 Cadillac Eldorado Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from Rolling Hills Ranch in Chula Vista on a weeknight. The owner of a 2000 Eldorado had two problems at once: the fob had stopped responding completely, and she wasn't totally sure whether the car would even start without it working.

That second part is a really common confusion with these late-90s and early-2000s GM setups. The remote and the ignition transponder are independent systems, and a dead fob does not lock you out of starting the car.

She was standing in her driveway, keys in hand, genuinely unsure whether to try starting it or wait for me.

I told her on the phone to go ahead and try the ignition. Car started fine. That settled her down immediately. The fob was the only issue.

When I got there I opened the fob first thing. Original battery, and it had clearly been in there for years. Corroded just enough on one contact point to drop the voltage below what the transmitter needed. Swapped a fresh CR2032, cleaned the contacts, and tested all four buttons at range from the end of the driveway. Lock, unlock, trunk, panic. All of them working.

She asked if I could tell how long it would have kept working if she hadn't called. Honestly, probably not long. A marginal battery in a fob this old can limp along for months and then just stop with no warning.

The whole job took less time than the drive out there. She did not need a replacement fob, did not need programming, did not need a dealer visit. She needed the right diagnosis, done at her house, in Rolling Hills Ranch.

Cadillac Eldorado Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How much does a 2000 Cadillac Eldorado key replacement cost?▼

We do not post prices here because it depends on what you need. A battery swap and contact cleaning is a different job than a full fob replacement, which is a different job again from an all-keys-lost transponder replacement. What I can tell you is that we come to you in Chula Vista, we quote you before we start, and that quote covers everything: parts, cutting if needed, programming if needed, and testing before we leave.
