A mobile locksmith rolls all of that into one number, with no shop overhead and no luxury brand markup built into the price. The gap is usually meaningful enough that most people who call a dealer first and then call me comment on the difference. You're getting the same functional result either way. The question is just what you want to pay for it.

Does the price include cutting and programming?

Yes. One price, everything included. On the 2000 Eldorado, the fob and the transponder key are separate components, so the job scope depends on which one needs attention. If it's just the remote fob, that's the fob, the battery, programming, and a full button test at range. If it's the ignition key, that's the key blank, cutting to your vehicle, transponder enrollment, and a start test before I leave. If you need both, we handle both on site. No separate labor line, no surprise charges at the end.

My Eldorado starts fine but the remote won't lock or unlock the doors. What's going on?

On these early-2000s GM systems, the remote receiver module and the ignition transponder system are separate. So a fob that stops responding to lock and unlock commands does not affect starting the car at all, and vice versa. The most common causes on a fob this age are a dead or weak CR2032 battery, corroded battery contacts inside the fob housing, or a damaged transmitter from being dropped or getting wet. Start with the battery. If a fresh CR2032 and clean contacts don't bring it back, the fob itself may need to be replaced and reprogrammed. That's a standard job. The car not starting would be a completely different conversation.

Can I program a replacement fob for my 2000 Eldorado myself at home?

These late-1990s and early-2000s GM remotes do have an onboard programming sequence that can work if you already have at least one working programmed fob in hand. The sequence involves the ignition and existing fob together. However, if you have no working fob at all, or if the sequence doesn't take, you need a programmer. Buying a replacement fob online and hoping the self-programming trick works is hit or miss on vehicles this age, especially if the body control module has already been through a few programming cycles. If you want it done right the first time, just have it done on site.
