I got a call from a woman parked near the Cardiff-by-the-Sea stretch of San Elijo, right off the main drag. Her 2006 Ford Five Hundred started fine that morning and then just stopped responding to her only key by afternoon. Not a dead key, not a broken one. The car would crank but immediately cut off.
