I got a call from a guy over in the Kit Carson Park Area of Escondido. He had a 2007 Ford Five Hundred sitting in his driveway and he had been fighting the ignition for a few weeks. The key would go in, then stick, then need a little wiggle and a prayer before the engine turned over. He had already been to the dealer, who told him the ignition cylinder was worn out and quoted him a full replacement with a new key cut and the programming to match.
He was about to say yes when his neighbor told him to at least get a second opinion from a mobile locksmith first.
When I got there, I decoded the existing cylinder right in the driveway. The wafers inside were worn, which is exactly what causes that sticky, hesitant feel on these cars as they age. The cylinder itself was not dead. I replaced the worn wafers, cut a fresh key blade matched to the repaired cylinder, and then addressed the remote head key side of things separately. The transponder in the new key got programmed to the vehicle, the remote functions tested out clean, and the ignition turned like it had ten years taken off it.
I walked him through the old wafers so he could see the wear himself. He appreciated that. He said the dealer never showed him anything, just handed him a number.
He saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer wanted, and he did not replace a single component that was not actually causing the problem. That is the job.
