2023 GMC Hummer Ev
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What exactly is a "remote" key and how does it work on the Hummer EV?

Your 2023 Hummer EV uses a six-button remote fob with a CR2450 battery. Inside the fob is a transponder chip that communicates with the vehicle's immobilizer system. When you use the fob, the truck verifies the programmed signal before it allows the drivetrain to operate. The remote also handles your door lock and unlock functions through the six-button layout. A fob that hasn't been programmed to your specific truck, even if it's the correct part, will not start the vehicle.

Q: How long does the dealer take for a GMC Hummer EV key replacement?

Longer than you'd expect, and it usually has nothing to do with the actual programming time. The programming itself isn't what eats your day. It's getting a service appointment, getting the right tech assigned, and waiting in the queue behind every other vehicle in the bay. Hummer EV owners on forums have reported waiting multiple days just for a key job because the vehicle needed to sit until the right person was available.

Q: My Hummer EV fob works sometimes and not others. What causes that?

Intermittent recognition is almost always a battery or contact issue before it's a programming issue. The CR2450 in this fob has more capacity than smaller cells, but it still weakens, and a weakening battery shows up as range loss and inconsistent detection first, total failure later. Check the battery seating, not just the charge level. A cell that reads fine on a meter can still fail under the load of actual RF transmission if the contact isn't making solid connection.

Q: Can I buy a fob online and have you program it to my Hummer EV?

Sometimes, but verify the factory FCC ID on the fob before you buy. The Hummer EV uses a specific six-button remote, and the aftermarket space has fobs that look right but aren't. If you bring me a compatible fob, I can program it. If it's not the correct fob for this vehicle, programming will not complete regardless of the tool used. Save the receipt and confirm the part matches before you order.

2023 GMC Hummer Ev Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from Rancho Del Rey on a Tuesday afternoon. A guy had his 2023 GMC Hummer EV sitting in the driveway and his fob had stopped being recognized by the truck. Not intermittently. Completely. He'd replaced the CR2450 himself, done it twice actually, convinced the first one he bought was a dud.

When I pulled up, he handed me the fob and I could see the problem before I even tested anything. The battery was seated, but the contact on the positive side had a slight bow to it from repeated prying. The cell was making just enough contact to show voltage on a meter but not enough to hold signal under load. Classic.

I cleaned the contacts, carefully reformed the positive clip, seated a fresh CR2450 flat and firm, and handed it back. The truck saw it immediately.

He stood there for a second. Then he said, "So I didn't need a new key."

No, he didn't. What he needed was someone to look at the actual problem instead of selling him something. I walked the full six-button function check right there in the driveway, made sure everything was reading clean, and that was the job.

He'd already gotten a quote from the dealer. It was not a small number. He saved a good chunk just by having someone come out and diagnose it correctly the first time.

GMC Hummer Ev Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I have to go to the GMC dealer to get a replacement key for my 2023 Hummer EV?▼

No. A qualified mobile locksmith with the right diagnostic equipment can cut and program a replacement remote for your 2023 Hummer EV on site. This truck does require professional programming tools tied to the vehicle's immobilizer, so it's not a job you can do with a generic OBD dongle from Amazon. But that doesn't mean dealer-only.
