I got a call from a guy in Westside Escondido on a weekday afternoon. He worked nearby, had parked on the street, and his one remaining key fob had stopped triggering the remote functions. The blade still worked mechanically, car still started, but the lock and unlock buttons were dead and he was already thinking worst case.
He had called the Jaguar dealer before he called me. They told him to bring it in, said they would need to diagnose the module first before they could even quote him on a replacement fob, and he might be without the car for a day or more.
When I got there, I opened the fob casing right on my service van hood. The CR2032 measured low, not dead, just low enough to drop out under load when the transmit circuit fired. Fresh battery, tested all four buttons. Still nothing on two of them.
That told me it was the fob itself, not the vehicle side. The circuit board inside had a stress fracture along one of the button contact traces. Classic result of a dropped fob that landed blade-first, which transfers impact right to the board.
I had a correct replacement fob shell and internals with me. Transferred his blade, connected my programming equipment to the OBD port, read the vehicle security data, and enrolled the new fob. Tested lock, unlock, and the remaining two buttons. Walked the perimeter and confirmed the remote functions were reading from a normal distance. The whole job was done before he finished his lunch.
He saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer was going to charge just to start looking at it.
