Out in Harbison Canyon, off a long winding road where houses sit back from the street, I pulled up to a 2008 Jaguar X-Type that had been sitting for a few days. The owner had a fob that looked like it had been through a decade of hard pocket carry, because it had. The housing had split along the seam near the top, and she had wrapped it in electrical tape to keep the two halves from separating entirely. Two of the five buttons had gone soft and unresponsive.
She had already called the dealer. They told her the key was done and quoted her a number she described as "genuinely upsetting." They wanted the car brought in, an appointment scheduled, parts ordered by VIN, and at least a couple days out of her vehicle. She lives in Harbison Canyon. That is not a situation where you can easily go without your car.
I opened the fob on the tailgate of my van and checked the internals. The circuit board was intact, the transponder was reading correctly, and the battery contact was still seated right. The housing was the problem, not the electronics. I transferred everything into a new shell, verified all five buttons, checked the emergency blade fit, and ran a full function test on every button including the lock, unlock, and the panic.
She watched the whole thing from about two feet away, which I prefer. When everything worked and the fob looked like a real key again instead of a taped-together puzzle, she just held it for a second before putting it in her pocket.
The dealer was not wrong that the fob needed attention. They were just quoting the most expensive path because it was the only one on their menu. Sometimes the chip inside is the part worth saving.
