Are you licensed and insured to work on Jeep vehicles?

The 2008 Commander is older hardware and does not require the kind of secure gateway access that newer vehicles demand, but the immobilizer programming still needs professional-grade equipment and the right software coverage for this generation. Not every locksmith carries that, which is why some shops turn away older Jeep key jobs or send owners straight to the dealer. How do I know you are not a scam locksmith?

It is a fair thing to ask. Scam locksmith operations are a known problem, and Jeep key calls attract them because the job sounds complicated enough that owners are not sure what is reasonable.

The pattern usually goes like this: a low quote on the phone, then a jump in price once they see the vehicle or realize the key needs programming. Some will cut the blade, tell you they cannot handle the immobilizer side, and still charge for the visit. You are left with a key that turns but does not start the car, and now you need someone else.

Question 3

Will the replacement key work exactly like my original?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The replacement remote head key gets programmed for both the transponder side and the remote functions: lock, unlock, trunk release, and the remaining buttons on the 6-button fob. Before we leave, we test every function individually at the vehicle.

That step matters. On these remote head keys, it is possible for one part of the system to work while another has not registered cleanly. The transponder can fire the engine while a remote button maps to the wrong function, or a button works intermittently because the new fob is not fully synced. We do not hand over the key until every function checks out. That is not a formality. It is just the job done correctly.

Question 4

I bought a replacement fob online. Can you just program it to my 2008 Commander?

Sometimes, with conditions. Aftermarket fobs for this generation vary a lot in quality, and some simply do not carry a compatible transponder chip inside the head. The remote portion might program fine and the buttons will work, but if the transponder inside is the wrong type or is absent entirely, the engine will crank and immediately stall every time. That is the immobilizer rejecting it.

If you bring an aftermarket fob, I will check the hardware before committing to the job. If it is compatible, we program it. If it is not, we source the right one. Either way, you are not paying for a key that does not fully work.

Question 5

My Commander starts fine but the remote buttons stopped working. Do I need a full replacement key?

Accepted Answer

Not necessarily. If the engine starts, the transponder inside the key head is still communicating with the immobilizer correctly. That rules out the bigger problem.

Dead remote buttons on a working key usually come down to one of three things: a failed CR2032, a cracked circuit board inside the fob housing, or a damaged receiver module in the vehicle. Swap the battery first with a name-brand cell and make sure it is seated flat against both contacts. If that does not bring the buttons back, the fob itself may have taken internal damage, which is common after a hard drop or water exposure. A cracked board is not repairable in the field. At that point you are looking at a new fob programmed to the existing key, which is a quicker job than a full replacement since the immobilizer side is already enrolled.
