I got a call from a daycare worker in Carmel Valley one morning. She was already running late, standing in the parking lot next to her 2008 Jeep Commander, and the remote head key was giving her nothing.

The immobilizer sync has a timed process built into these trucks and you just have to let it run. There is no shortcut.
Once the sequence finished, I registered the new key, verified the transponder would fire the engine, then walked every button on the fob and confirmed the remote functions. She was inside the daycare fifteen minutes late instead of missing the whole morning. And she paid a fraction of what the dealer had quoted her when she called them first.
The dealer, by the way, told her it would be next-day at the earliest.
