A guy was on his way back through De Luz, out on the rural stretch where the road drops down toward the creek, when his 2010 Jeep Commander went quiet on him. Not dead quiet.
The engine ran fine. But he went to lock up at a pullout and the fob did nothing. Then he noticed the key-not-detected warning flickering when he got back in. He figured it was the battery. It was not the battery.
He called me from the pullout. I was already out in the Fallbrook area, so the drive was short.
When I got there, the CR2032 he had swapped himself was seated fine. The problem was the fob board. Corrosion on the internal contacts, probably from a slow moisture intrusion over time. The remote functions were gone entirely and the transponder signal had gotten weak enough that the immobilizer was throwing a fit.
I had the right fob body in the van. Transferred what I could from the old unit, programmed the replacement into the vehicle's immobilizer through the OBD port, cut the blade to match his locks, and handed it back to him. Tested every button, tested the start, walked the doors.
He had been mentally preparing for a tow to the dealer and a multi-day wait. Instead he was back on Rancho California Road inside an hour. The dealer comparison came up, but only briefly. He was already focused on the drive home.
