2009 Jeep Commander
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long will a replacement key last on a 2009 Commander?

The programming does not expire. Once a key is enrolled in the immobilizer, it stays registered until something actively removes it -- like an all-keys-lost reset or a module replacement. The CR2032 battery is the only maintenance item, and it typically runs a couple of years with normal use. Shell wear depends on how the key is treated.

Q: What if the new key stops working a few weeks after you program it?

Call us first. A properly programmed key does not spontaneously drop out of the system. If it stops working, something caused it. The most common culprits on this generation are a low or failing vehicle battery (which can confuse the immobilizer and produce a key-not-detected warning), a weak CR2032 in the fob, or a module-level issue in the vehicle itself. If the vehicle battery is marginal, it can throw off the security system even when the key is fine.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can you just program it, or does it have to be your blank?

Bring it and we will check it. The key thing is whether the electronics inside match what the 2009 Commander expects -- the factory FCC ID and the correct transponder type. If the fob you bought matches those specs, there is a good chance we can program it. If someone sold you a generic shell with mismatched internals, it will not enroll no matter what tool is used.

Q: All my keys are lost. Can you still make a replacement for a 2009 Commander?

Yes. All-keys-lost on this generation is a standard job. It requires diagnostic equipment to clear the existing key memory from the immobilizer and enroll new keys from scratch. The procedure takes longer than a simple add-a-key -- closer to 45 to 60 minutes depending on how the system responds -- because of the security access and reset sequence involved. Bring your VIN and proof of ownership and I come to you in Coronado Village. No tow to a dealer required.

2009 Jeep Commander Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I parked on Orange Avenue in Coronado Village on a Tuesday afternoon for what the owner described as a simple spare key job. She had one working key for her 2009 Commander and wanted a backup before she ended up stranded.

When I got there, she was standing next to the truck in the small lot, watching me unload. She had already looked up the dealer quote and told me the number without me asking. I just nodded and got to work.

The Commander takes a remote head key -- fob and blade together as one piece. I confirmed her VIN, verified the key type, pulled the right blank, and cut the blade to her vehicle. Then I connected my programmer to the OBD port, ran the security access sequence for the immobilizer, and enrolled the new key. The whole thing happened in the parking lot under normal afternoon sun.

She asked if the old key would still work after I programmed a new one. It does -- on the Commander, adding a key does not wipe the existing ones, as long as you are not doing an all-keys-lost reset. I tested both keys back to back so she could see them working together.

Thirty-five minutes from the time I pulled up. She had a working spare in her hand, confirmed on lock, unlock, and ignition. The dealer had quoted her a wait of several days just to get an appointment, plus significantly more money. That part barely came up. She was mostly just glad it was done before the parking meter ran out.

Jeep Commander Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on the 2009 Jeep Commander?▼

We use quality blanks that match the factory FCC ID and the correct transponder electronics for the Commander. Aftermarket shells for this generation are widely available and electrically reliable when the internals match spec, but quality varies a lot. The main forum complaints about aftermarket fobs on this platform are about button feel and plastic durability after a year of use, not about programming failure when the electronics are correct.
