Out in Richland, I pulled up to a 2010 LR4 sitting in a driveway off a side street in San Marcos. The owner had already replaced the battery in his fob. Fresh CR2032, he said. Still showing a key warning on the dash when he tried to start it.
He had one fob. That was the whole situation.
I asked him to hold the fob directly against the start button and try. It cranked. So the fob was alive, barely, but the range was almost nothing. He walked me through what happened: fob started acting up gradually, short range at first, then the door handles stopped waking up, then the dash started throwing a key warning even with the fob in his hand.
I opened the fob up on the hood. The CR2032 he installed was correct, but the positive contact had a slight upward bow from being pried too hard during the swap. It was making intermittent contact, not solid contact. I straightened the clip, cleaned both contact surfaces, reseated the battery correctly, and closed the housing.
Range came back immediately. Door handles lit up on approach. Start button read it from a normal distance. Took about eight minutes total.
He had already called the dealer before he called me. They wanted the car dropped off, said they would need to look at it, and could not give him a same-day window. He was relieved it turned out to be a contact issue and not a full programming job. So was I, honestly. The simple ones are satisfying when the diagnosis is right.
