I got a call from a family in Fernbrook, Ramona, on a Sunday evening around 8:30. They had been out most of the day and came back to find their 2014 LR4 showing a key-not-detected warning. The fob had been working fine that morning. Now nothing.
When I pulled up, the owner had already tried the obvious things. New CR2032 from the hardware store, installed correctly. Still the same warning. The door handles were not responding on approach, the start button was seeing nothing, and the backup insert key worked the lock cylinder manually but the car would not crank.
I ran diagnostics through the OBD port and found the fob had actually dropped out of the vehicle's memory. That happens sometimes, usually after a dead battery event or a module power interruption, and it looks exactly like a hardware failure when it is not. The fob itself was fine.
Re-enrolling the key took me about 40 minutes start to finish, including a full test of every button, both door handles, the liftgate release, and a couple of ignition cycles to confirm the immobilizer had accepted the registration cleanly.
The owner mentioned the dealer had quoted them a week out just for an appointment, and the key itself would have needed to be ordered. We were done before 10 PM on a Sunday. That part almost never comes up in conversation, but it should.
