2016 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Is a mobile locksmith actually cheaper than the Land Rover dealer for this?

On Land Rovers specifically, the gap tends to be one of the wider ones I see. Dealers separate out every piece of the job and charge accordingly. The fob is one charge. Programming is another. If they need to run diagnostics, that is another. It stacks up fast. Owners on forums have posted dealer quotes for Evoque smart key work that climb well into the hundreds before they even get to programming.

Q: Does your price include cutting and programming, or are those separate?

One price, everything in. The fob, the emergency blade cut to your vehicle, programming the smart key through the diagnostic port, syncing all five buttons, and testing door handles and start function before I leave. That is the job. Dealers break it into separate line items because that is how their service departments bill. We do not. What I quote you on the phone is what you pay.

Q: My Evoque starts fine but the door handle touch unlock stopped working on one side. Is that a key problem?

Almost certainly not. If the vehicle starts and the fob is being recognized, the key is doing its job. Touch unlock on the door handles is handled by sensors built into each handle, and they can fail independently. This is a known weak point on the Evoque. If it is isolated to one door while the other side works fine, the fob is not the issue.

Q: I lost both keys to my 2016 Evoque. Can you still make a new one without having a working key to start from?

Yes. All-keys-lost on the Evoque is a job I handle regularly. It requires professional diagnostic equipment connected through the OBD port to clear the existing key data from the immobilizer and register a new fob from scratch. The old keys get wiped so they cannot be used to start the vehicle. I cut the emergency blade on site, program the new smart key, and test everything before leaving.

2016 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A woman in Harbison Canyon called me on a Tuesday afternoon. Her 2016 Range Rover Evoque had been throwing a key-not-detected warning for two days. She said she replaced the fob battery herself, but the warning kept coming back, and now the driver-side door handle was no longer unlocking on touch the way it was supposed to.

She was already bracing for a dealer trip. She had looked it up, knew what Land Rover dealers charge for anything involving the smart key system, and was not happy about it.

I pulled up to her place in Alpine and started simple. Opened the fob and looked at how the battery was sitting. She had used the right battery type, but it was just slightly cocked, not lying perfectly flat. One contact was barely making connection. Reseated it properly, cleaned both contact points with a dry cloth.

Then I walked the car. Driver door touch unlock was back. Passenger side confirmed working. Ran all five buttons. Tested the start. No warning on the dash.

The keyless module had been reacting to inconsistent voltage from a poorly seated battery. That was the whole job.

She had already mentally prepared to spend a lot more money and lose the car for a day or two. She did not have to do either.

Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How much does a 2016 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque key replacement cost?▼

Call us for the exact number, but the short version is: way less than the dealer. Land Rover dealers tend to itemize a smart key job into separate charges for the fob itself, the emergency blade, the programming session, and sometimes a diagnostic fee on top. Owners have reported quotes in the several-hundred-dollar range from dealers for a single spare, and all-keys-lost situations push that even higher.
