I got a call from a guy out at a parking lot near the VA clinic in East Valley, Escondido. He was a disabled veteran, used a wheelchair, and his only key fob for his 2006 Lincoln LS had stopped responding. His aide wasn't with him that day. Getting across town to a Lincoln dealer was not a realistic option, not logistically and not in terms of the wait they were going to put him through.
I loaded up and drove out to him.
The LS is a folding remote head key setup, so the blade is integrated right into the fob. His blade was fine. The fob body was the problem. The battery contact inside had some oxidation on it, which a fresh CR2032 alone wasn't going to solve. I cleaned the contacts, seated a new cell, and tested range. Still not registering reliably. The fob had some deeper wear.
I cut a replacement key blade to the vehicle, got the new remote head key programmed through the OBD port, and ran through the full check: lock, unlock, trunk release, all three buttons. Took maybe 45 minutes start to finish in the lot.
He didn't have to arrange a ride. Didn't have to wait for a dealer appointment. He told me the dealer had quoted him a price that made him pause before he even asked about scheduling. He paid a fraction of that and drove himself back into the clinic.
