Got a call from someone near the CSUSM Area in San Marcos, parked in a lot, key in hand. The car started fine. But nothing on the remote worked at all. No lock, no unlock, not even a click from the doors. She had already tried holding the buttons longer, pointing it at different angles, the whole routine people do when they don't know what else to try.
When I got there, I opened the fob and checked the CR2032 first. It read low enough to explain the range problem, but not dead. Swapped it fresh, re-tested. Still nothing from the remote.
That told me the battery wasn't the whole story. The remote side had lost its pairing to the car, which does happen on these, sometimes after a battery swap if the process isn't done right, sometimes on its own after years of normal use. The transponder was still talking to the immobilizer because the car kept starting. But the radio frequency side of the fob was no longer recognized.
Pulled out the programming equipment, re-enrolled the remote to the vehicle right there in the parking lot. Tested every button individually before I packed anything up.
She asked what the dealer would have said. I told her probably a week out for an appointment and a bill that would make her wince. She had her working key back in under an hour from the time she called.
