Out near the Las Americas Area in San Ysidro, I got a call from someone parked in a lot off the border crossing corridor. Her 2014 MINI Clubman was showing a key-not-detected warning on the dash and she could not get the car to acknowledge the fob at all. She had already tried holding the fob closer to the start button, which is what everyone tries.
When I pulled up, she had the fob in her hand and looked like she had been troubleshooting for a while. I asked if she had replaced the battery recently. She said no, the car was just suddenly not reading it this morning.
I opened the fob on the spot. The CR2032 inside was showing a low voltage read on the meter. Not completely dead, but not enough for the car's receiver to pick it up reliably, especially in a busy RF environment like that area near the border crossing where there is a lot of wireless traffic competing for the same frequencies. Swapped the battery, reseated the contacts, and the fob came back immediately. Car started, all four buttons checked out, door handles responded the way they should.
She was back on the road in under fifteen minutes. The whole thing was a battery that looked like it had more life left than it did. Sometimes that is the whole story.
She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a significant wait time just to get a diagnostic appointment, on top of the cost of a replacement fob if it came to that. What she actually needed was a fresh CR2032 and someone who showed up where she was parked.
