I was parked on Richland just off the main stretch in San Marcos when the call came in. Owner of a 2015 MINI Clubman, second owner, bought it without a spare key and had been meaning to get one made for months. Then the one fob he had started acting up and the timeline moved up fast.
He described it pretty clearly: fob would lock the car fine from close range, but unlock had gotten flaky, and twice that week he got a key-not-detected warning when he walked up to the car even though the fob was in his pocket. Classic low-battery behavior on this generation, but he had already swapped the CR2032 himself and it had not fully resolved. That told me something else was going on alongside the battery swap.
When I got there I opened the fob and checked the battery contact points. The replacement CR2032 he put in was a budget cell and it was reading low voltage under load, even though it was brand new. Happens with off-brand cells. Swapped it for a quality cell, reseated everything cleanly.
Then I ran the diagnostic side. The fob he had was still registered correctly, no corruption, but the key count in the system showed a ghost entry from somewhere, likely a dealer demo key that never got cleared when the car was sold. That kind of thing sits quiet until something nudges the system, and a low-battery event can do exactly that.
Cleared the ghost entry, re-registered his existing fob, and added a second one so he would never be in this position again. Tested every function on both fobs at the car, walked both doors, checked the warning was gone and stayed gone through a couple of lock cycles.
He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a significant wait just for a key appointment, on top of the cost. We were done on his street, same morning he called.
