2013 MINI Clubman Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I was out in Carlton Hills on a Tuesday afternoon, parking lot off Mast Boulevard area, for a 2013 MINI Clubman. The owner had one key left and it had stopped unlocking the doors remotely. Car started fine with it, but the buttons were completely dead.
She had already bought a replacement online. A used remote head key, same button count, looked right. She just needed it programmed, she said. Reasonable assumption.
I pulled up the vehicle and ran the diagnostic connection first, the way I always do before cutting anything. The original key was still in the system and reading fine as a transponder. The buttons were the problem, not the chip, which meant the housing on her original key had probably taken a hit and cracked the circuit board inside.
I opened her original key on the hood. Sure enough, the board had a hairline crack near one of the solder points for the lock button. The transponder itself was intact.
The used key she bought online was not going to be a plug-and-play. Used remote head keys from this generation often come with a transponder already registered to another vehicle. That one needed to be erased and re-enrolled to her car before it would do anything.
Ran the all-keys-present add-key routine through the OBD port, enrolled the replacement, cut the blade to her vehicle, and confirmed every button worked before I packed up. She left with a functioning key and the original still in the system as a backup, though I told her the cracked board on that one would eventually give up entirely.
The dealer had quoted her a wait time measured in days plus a tow because they wanted the car on their lot. She was back on the road before her kids got home from school.
