2016 MINI Clubman
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Do you need the factory FCC ID to make a replacement key for my Clubman?

No. If your key is lost, that number is gone with it. I identify the correct fob from the year, make, model, and vehicle data. You do not need to track down any numbers from the old key to get a replacement made.

Q: I lost all my keys to my 2016 MINI Clubman. Can you still make one?

Yes, and I do these regularly. All-keys-lost on an F54 Clubman is more involved than a simple add-a-key job. The body electronics module needs to be accessed through the diagnostic port, the existing key memory gets cleared, and the new fob is registered from scratch. The blade gets cut to the vehicle at the same time.

Q: My 2016 Clubman starts fine but shows a key warning on the dash. What is going on?

A key-not-detected warning on these while the car actually starts usually points to one of two things: a low fob battery, or the fob is being recognized just barely well enough to allow the start but not consistently enough for the system to stay satisfied. CR2032 first, always. If the warning clears after a fresh battery, you are done. If it comes back, or if the car occasionally refuses to start at all, the fob may need inspection or replacement.

Q: Can I buy a fob online and have you program it, or does it have to come from the dealer?

You can buy a fob elsewhere, but verify it is the correct unit for a 2016 F54 Clubman before purchasing. A mismatched fob will not pair no matter what tools are used. If you have the right part, I can program it. What you cannot do is program it yourself at home. There is no button sequence or ignition trick for this system. It requires diagnostic equipment. Dealer-sourced parts are not required, but correct parts are.

2016 MINI Clubman Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from someone in North Park, parked on one of those narrow streets off 30th. She had one key left for her 2016 MINI Clubman and it had stopped locking the doors remotely. Car started, drove fine, but the lock and unlock buttons were getting no response. She thought the fob was dying and wanted a backup made while she still had a working key to reference.

When I arrived she handed me the fob. Four-button unit, felt solid, no cracked housing. I popped it open on my work board on the hood of my van. The CR2032 inside was the original, no date stamp visible, contacts had a faint film on them. Swapped it for a fresh cell, cleaned the contacts, reassembled.

She pressed lock from ten feet away. Mirrors folded, doors locked. That was the whole problem.

We still talked through making a spare because one key on a modern MINI is a real risk. The all-keys-lost job on these takes longer and costs more than adding a second while you have a working key in hand. She decided to add one on the spot. I cut the blade, ran the programming through the diagnostic port, tested every button and the start function, and walked the car once before packing up.

The dealer had quoted her a figure that made her pause before she even called them back. She saved a good chunk coming to me instead, and I came to her.

MINI Clubman Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What battery does the 2016 MINI Clubman key fob use?▼

CR2032. It is one of the most available batteries around, and that is good because a weak one on these fobs causes real confusion. Owners report the car starting fine but remote functions dropping off, or the fob range shrinking to a few feet. Before assuming the fob itself has failed, swap the battery and test every button. If I am making you a replacement key, a fresh CR2032 goes in before I hand it over.
