2009 Pontiac Vibe
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What is the FCC ID on the 2009 Pontiac Vibe fob and why does it matter?

The factory FCC ID is printed on the back of your existing fob. Reading it off before you call helps confirm we have the exact right shell and electronics in the van before we roll out. Mismatched fob hardware is one of the more common reasons a programmed key still behaves badly. Takes about ten seconds to find and saves a round trip.

Q: How fast can you get to South Poway?

Typical arrival in South Poway is 15 to 25 minutes from the time you call. We dispatch whoever is closest. No appointment window, no scheduling days out. If you are sitting in a parking lot off Scripps Poway Parkway right now, call and we are moving.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can I program it myself to my 2009 Vibe?

No self-programming sequence exists for the remote head key on this vehicle. The transponder chip inside the fob head has to be registered to the immobilizer through the OBD port using a programmer. There is no ignition-turn trick, no button sequence, nothing like that. The remote buttons on some older vehicles can be synced through a DIY process, but that only handles the lock and unlock functions, not the chip.

Q: My 2009 Vibe starts and then stalls immediately. Could the key be the problem?

That crank-and-stall pattern is a classic sign the immobilizer is not recognizing the transponder chip. Could be a worn or damaged chip inside the key head, a key that was never properly registered, or an immobilizer that needs attention. It can also show up after a dead battery in the car resets certain modules. I diagnose this on site. If it turns out to be a key and chip issue, I handle it the same visit.

2009 Pontiac Vibe Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy in South Poway called on a Tuesday afternoon. His 2009 Vibe had one key left, and he had just snapped the head off it trying to get the blade out of a sticky ignition cylinder. The transponder chip was still rattling around inside the broken plastic head. Not an unusual call, but the timing was rough because he had to pick his kid up in two hours.

I asked him to send a photo before I headed out. The blade was bent at the base but still measurable. The chip looked intact inside the cracked housing. I confirmed the fob style from the factory FCC ID he read off the sticker on the broken piece, cross-checked my inventory, and told him I had the right blank ready to go.

Pulled up to his driveway in South Poway about twenty minutes later. Cut a fresh blade to match his ignition on the key machine, moved the programming connector to his OBD port, and registered the new key to the immobilizer. The whole thing took under forty minutes including a test cycle where I had him start and shut the car off twice to confirm the chip was reading clean.

He made the pickup. Dealer had told him it would be two days minimum to get the blank in. He said that like it was a punch line.

What battery does the 2009 Pontiac Vibe key fob use?▼

CR2016. Not the CR2032 you see everywhere, the thinner one. It is easy to grab the wrong cell if you are just eyeballing the size at the store. A dead or wrong-size battery will kill your remote functions but the transponder chip in the key head still runs off the car's RF field, so the car will still start even with a dead fob battery.
