A guy in the Richland area of San Marcos called on a Saturday afternoon. He had one key for his 2010 Pontiac Vibe, and it had been getting flaky for a few weeks. He figured he would deal with it eventually. Then eventually arrived all at once: the key turned, the engine caught for a second, and died. He tried it four or five more times. Same result every time.
He told me he had already swapped the battery in the fob, thinking that was it. It was not.
When I got there I could see the fob was original to the car, probably never serviced in fourteen years. The remote buttons were still responding, which told me the battery swap had helped that side. But the transponder chip not being recognized by the immobilizer is a different problem, and a fresh CR2016 does not fix a registration issue.
I connected to the OBD port, ran through the security reset, and programmed a new remote head key to the car. Tested the remote functions, tested the start, let it idle for a few minutes to confirm no stall. Solid.
He asked what the dealer would have done. I told him they would have scheduled him in, possibly days out, and the bill would have been noticeably heavier. He just nodded. That part was an afterthought. What he actually cared about was driving to his kid's game that afternoon.
He made it.
