I got a call from a guy out near Fletcher Cove in Solana Beach. Retired, sharp, clearly used to getting straight answers. He had a 2014 Cayenne and a problem that looked worse than it was.
He'd dropped the fob on the stone entryway outside his place. Car-shaped housing, cracked right at the front seam, and the emergency blade inside had come loose from its clip. I backed up his key data with my programming equipment before touching anything. That's just how I work on these. Then I moved his circuit board into a fresh shell, reseated the blade, dropped in a new CR2032, and ran through the full check: every button, door lock and unlock on both sides, the start function, the whole thing.
Five minutes of testing confirmed what I already expected. Same fob, new house. He saved a significant amount over the dealer quote for something that didn't need a full replacement at all.
He seemed less surprised than I thought he'd be. I think he already suspected the dealer was steering him toward the more expensive path.
