A guy in the Beyer Blvd Corridor parked his 2016 Porsche Cayenne the night before a morning distributor meeting and woke up to a fob that wouldn't do anything. When I got there, the CR2032 he'd put in was the right battery but the contact on one side had a slight outward bow from whoever opened it last, probably with a screwdriver instead of a coin. But that wasn't the whole story. When I ran diagnostics, the immobilizer had a stored fault from a prior incomplete pairing attempt, likely from when someone had tried to program a spare key at some point and didn't finish the process. That ghost enrollment was sitting in memory and causing the security system to flag the fob as unverified on cold starts. I cleared it, re-paired his fob properly, and tested through a full lock, unlock, and start cycle.
He made his meeting. The dealer was still a week out. Total time on site was under an hour, right there in the Beyer Blvd Corridor where I parked behind his Cayenne.
He asked at the end what the dealer would have charged. I told him to think about what his time was worth sitting without a car for a week, and leave it at that.
