2014 Subaru Tribeca Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I got a call from a guy in the Naval Base Area in Coronado. He was parked on a narrow residential street, the kind where a delivery truck parks and suddenly nobody moves for ten minutes. His 2014 Tribeca was sitting there and he had one key, a remote head key, that was doing something odd: the car started fine, every time, but the lock and unlock buttons had completely stopped responding. He'd already bought a replacement battery. Didn't help.
He'd called the dealer before calling me. They told him to bring the car in, which was fine since it was still drivable, but then added that the fob itself would need to be ordered and that programming was a separate appointment. He was looking at days without a functioning remote, and a bill that made him pause enough to search for another option.
I drove out to him. He met me on the street.
I opened the remote head key housing right on the hood of the Tribeca. The CR2032 he'd installed was seated, but one of the contact clips had a slight outward bow, not making full contact with the battery face. The button pads on the board looked fine. I re-tensioned the clip, reseated the battery, snapped the housing closed, and walked every button. Lock, unlock, the other two functions, all working. Range was back to normal.
He'd been one bad contact away from a full key replacement he didn't need. We talked for a couple of minutes while I verified the transponder side was still reading correctly at the ignition. It was. He drove off with the same key he'd always had, just fixed.
The dealer route would have cost him more, taken longer, and replaced a part that was never broken.
