A couple out in the Viejas Area had gotten up before dawn to meet the PODS pickup at their lot. They were combining two households, and every box, every piece of furniture they owned was already loaded and sealed. Somewhere in one of those containers was the only key to their 2016 Volkswagen Touareg. They were almost certain of it. Almost.
The container pickup was scheduled for noon. Unloading to find the key meant losing the time slot, and rescheduling that pickup was going to cost them a day they did not have.

I was at the lot within the hour. The Touareg takes a remote flip key, and I decoded the lock cylinder on site to get the cut. Ran the blade on my machine right there in the lot. Then came the part that actually unlocks the car's brain: the add-a-key procedure through the OBD port, registering the new key to the immobilizer with the right equipment. The whole job took under 45 minutes from the time I pulled in.
One thing I made sure to tell them before I left: the original key, if they find it buried in a box during unpacking, will still work. Add-a-key does not wipe existing keys from the system. They could end up with both.
The container left on time. They saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer would have quoted them, and more importantly, they did not lose their moving day.
