Acura sells the fob assembly under part numbers 72147-SJA-A01 and 72147-SJA-A11 across the 2011 trims (RL, RL-TEC, RL-ADV, RL-H). The metal insert key will open the car and turn the ignition, but the engine will not start unless the embedded transponder has been properly registered to your RL.

My RL says KEYLESS REMOTE NOT DETECTED. What do I try first?

Start with the batteries. This remote uses two CR2025 cells, and owners often replace one and leave the other weak. When voltage drops, you’ll usually see “KEYLESS REMOTE LOW BATTERY” before the full “KEYLESS REMOTE NOT DETECTED” warning.

1. Replace both CR2025s and check that the battery contacts are not flattened.
2. Get the remote fully inside the cabin. Passing it through an open window can confuse the antennas.
3. If the message appears while driving, do not shut the car off somewhere risky. The engine can keep running, but it will not restart once turned to LOCK unless a recognized remote is back inside.

My dash shows CHECK KEYLESS ACCESS SYSTEM. Is it the fob or the car?

“CHECK KEYLESS ACCESS SYSTEM” often points to a vehicle-side fault in the antennas or control units. One documented code tied to this system is DTC B1660, listed as “Front Interior LF Antenna Circuit Open.” On the RL, that antenna sits in the console area, and there are additional LF antennas and smart control units that handle proximity detection.

A generic OBD reader usually won’t show these body codes. Proper diagnosis requires Honda-capable diagnostics to see the keyless access data and stored faults.

I bought an OEM ACJ8D8E24A04 fob online. Can you program it?

Usually, yes, if it’s the correct RL remote and not locked to another vehicle. It still has to be registered through the immobilizer setup process.

There’s also a known Acura quirk when adding keys. The i-HDS tool can freeze on a screen that reads “No Communication with the Immobilizer Control Unit-Receiver.” Acura documented this in Tech Line Summary BTS 180401 and the i-HDS known-issues list as HONCUST-738. The workaround involves removing the ignition switch cover, inserting the metal key, turning it to ON, and then continuing the registration. A shop that knows these cars won’t get stuck there.
