Yes, and it's something I handle on site. On the 2006 A3, the ignition cylinder is a traditional turn-key setup, which actually makes extraction more workable than on some newer designs. The goal is always to get the broken piece out without damaging the cylinder itself. In most cases that works fine, and then I cut a new blade from your vehicle's key code and get the replacement registered. If the cylinder took damage in the process, that's a separate conversation, but that's the exception not the rule. Don't let anyone tell you the whole ignition needs replacing before they've actually tried the extraction.

The fob also carries the remote electronics for the four buttons, which handle lock, unlock, and the other remote functions. The blade, the chip, and the remote transmitter are all in one unit. That's why a cracked shell is worth dealing with properly rather than just taping it up and hoping nothing shifts inside.

My Audi is showing a key-not-detected warning. What should I check first?

Start with the battery. The factory spec for this fob is a CR2032. If it's been a few years, just replace it before assuming anything else is wrong. Weak batteries on these can produce intermittent detection failures that look like a bigger problem.

If the battery is fresh and you're still getting the warning, try holding the fob body close to the ignition cylinder when you turn the key. The vehicle can power the transponder through inductive coupling at close range even when the remote side of the fob is dead. If the car starts that way, the transponder is fine and you're dealing with a remote circuit or battery contact issue.

If neither of those gets you started, then it's time to dig into whether the problem is the key itself or something on the vehicle side. A battery disconnect or a module fault can cause the immobilizer to lose its registration state. That's a diagnostic job, not a battery swap.

Can I buy a replacement fob online and have you just program it, or does it have to come from Audi?

You can buy aftermarket or used fobs, but there are a few things to know before you do. The replacement needs to match the factory FCC ID on your original fob. A fob sourced from a different vehicle or a mismatched spec won't register correctly regardless of what the listing says. If you buy one, double-check the FCC ID on the label before you commit.

Used fobs that were previously programmed to another vehicle can usually be cleared and registered to yours. Aftermarket fobs vary in quality and some have weak transmitter range even after a clean programming. I've seen owners save a little on the part and end up with a fob that works from ten feet when the original did forty. Bring it and we'll get it done, but buy carefully.

The buttons on my flip key still work but the blade is loose and wobbles. Do I need a full replacement?

Probably not. The blade pivot on these flip keys uses a small roll pin, and when that pin wears or backs out slightly, the blade stops locking into position and starts wobbling or sitting at an angle. The key still functions but it feels wrong and can eventually stress the housing.

If the chip and remote electronics are intact, this is a shell and hardware repair. The internals transfer to a new housing, the blade gets re-secured, and nothing on the programming side changes. It's a much smaller job than a full key replacement. Worth getting looked at before the housing cracks completely and turns a simple fix into a more involved one.
