I pulled into the Kit Carson Park Area on a Tuesday morning for what sounded like a simple job. The owner had a 2019 Audi A3 and a broken key. Not lost, broken, snapped off at the base of the blade where it meets the bow. Half of it was still in her ignition cylinder.
That changes the job a little. First priority was extracting the broken piece without damaging the cylinder. I carry extraction tools for exactly this, and on the A3 the ignition barrel is accessible enough that it went cleanly. No drama there.
Once the barrel was clear, I decoded the lock to pull the cut spec rather than guessing from a factory code that might not match the current lock anyway. Locks on used vehicles do not always match original factory records, especially if a cylinder was serviced at some point. Decoding takes the guesswork out completely.
Cut the replacement key blade on my machine to match, tested the ignition. Smooth. The car started, ran fine, no stalling, which told me the anti-theft side of things was not raising any flags on this particular visit.
She mentioned the dealer told her they would need the car towed in and the job would take a few days minimum. I was done and gone in under an hour, right in her parking lot. She did not need to tow anything.
