First thing to try is a fresh CR2032. These fobs are known to behave inconsistently when the battery voltage drops, even if a tester says the battery is okay. If the buttons come back after a swap, you are done.

If a new battery does not fix it, the issue is usually the circuit board or the transmitter itself, not the chip. That means the fob needs to be replaced and reprogrammed, but it is not an immobilizer problem. If the car also stops starting, then both systems are affected and you are looking at a full key replacement with programming.

Can I buy a replacement fob online and just have it cut and programmed?

You can, but check the factory FCC ID on your current fob before you buy anything. The 2010 A3 has variation in fob types and not every aftermarket blank sold online matches what your car expects. A mismatched fob wastes money because the chip inside may not be compatible with your immobilizer, and cutting the blade on an incompatible blank does not fix that.
