2004 BMW Z4
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2004 BMW Z4 Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A homeowner in Ramona Highlands called on a Saturday morning. His 2004 Z4 was sitting in the driveway and the remote head key wasn't doing anything -- no lock, no unlock, nothing from the buttons. The car would still start, so he'd been living with it for a while, but now he'd lost the key entirely and didn't have a spare.

He'd already called the dealer. They told him to tow it in, and mentioned parts would need to be ordered. The weekend made that worse. He looked up tow companies next, got a quote that made him pause, and then he found me.

His property is up in the hills. The roads in that part of Ramona Highlands are narrow and the grade is real. A flatbed wasn't going to have an easy time, and honestly the car didn't need to move at all.

I parked on the street and walked up with my bag. The Z4 was right there in the driveway. I connected to the vehicle, pulled up the immobilizer system, and confirmed the key count. Then I cut a new key blade to the car, built out the remote head key housing with a fresh CR2032, programmed the transponder, and synced the remote.

Tested every button. Tested the start. Walked the whole thing with him so he could see it working before I packed up.

He mentioned he'd been putting off dealing with it for two weeks because the tow-and-wait process sounded like a project. One Saturday visit and it was done. The dealer comparison came up at the end -- he'd gotten a rough quote earlier and what he paid me was a fraction of that. But the bigger thing for him was that his car never left the driveway.
