I got a call out to East Lemon Grove on a Tuesday afternoon. The owner of a 2015 BMW Z4 had his only key stop working mid-week, which with a two-seat roadster means the car just sits there looking good while doing nothing useful for anyone.
He had already tried the obvious. Turned the key, got into the car fine, but the engine cranked and stalled right back out. That stall-on-start pattern points directly to the immobilizer not recognizing the transponder chip in the key. The key itself had some visible wear on the blade, and he figured it had just given up after years of daily use.
I drove out and parked behind him in his driveway off the East Lemon Grove side. Verified the VIN, checked his registration, and got to work. The blade was decoded and cut to the vehicle on site in the van. The transponder side of the job took longer, working through the immobilizer enrollment with the key in the cylinder.
Total time was about 50 minutes. He had a working key, confirmed by starting and shutting the car off three times in a row without a stall.
He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a wait of several days just to get the key ordered, then another appointment to have it cut and programmed. He was not thrilled about that math, especially for a car he drives daily. The mobile route saved him the tow, the wait, and a good chunk of money.
