He had been in South Oceanside for about a week before I got the call. Parked his 2007 BMW Z4 in a covered lot off the strand, flew out for work, and came back to a fob that was completely dead. Buttons did nothing. He tried holding it to the steering column the way he had read online. Nothing. Doors locked, car sitting there.
The dealer told him Friday. It was Wednesday evening.
I was at the lot in under 45 minutes. Got the door open mechanically, which on a Z4 with a fold-out blade is actually clean work once you know the lock cylinder. Then I connected my diagnostic tool to the OBD port and pulled up the immobilizer module. His key data was still registered to the car, which was good news. The fob had not been lost or erased. The internal rechargeable cell had just given out completely, and without it the transponder was not getting enough power to handshake with the car's security system on a reliable basis.
I rebuilt the fob, resynced it to the immobilizer, and confirmed every button was working before I packed up. Locks, unlock, the third button. Walked it twice.
Then I handed him a spare CR2032 for the glovebox and told him to keep an eye on it every six months or so. He asked me what the dealer would have charged. I told him to think about what two days in a hotel plus a tow plus dealer labor adds up to, and then consider what he paid me. He did the math and laughed a little.
He drove home that same night. The Z4 never moved from the space he had pulled into a week earlier.
